Gettin' By: Poverty and the Brain
Description:
In this session, participants experience a brief simulation that demonstrates how poverty affects the brain, overwhelming executive function and narrowing focus to immediate needs. This firsthand perspective helps explain why “poor” decisions can make sense under stress. A debrief then explores the brain science behind these effects in clear, accessible terms—how chronic stress impacts decision-making, physical health, and daily functioning. Finally, participants learn practical strategies to apply this knowledge in their work. Using evidence-based tools, they discover how to communicate and support clients more effectively when poverty limits time, energy, and mental resources.
Our Presenter: Linda Riddell, MS
About our presenter:
Linda Riddell, MS, is an epidemiologist specializing in poverty and brain science communication. She created gettin’ by, an interactive training that helps professionals better understand and support people living in poverty through a realistic simulation of scarcity’s effects on the brain. After five years of testing, she launched the program nationally in 2019 and now presents it at numerous conferences to strong reviews. Linda holds a BA in English from the University of Cincinnati and an MS in Health Policy and Management from the University of Southern Maine, with additional coursework from Johns Hopkins in social epidemiology and biostatistics.
