Counseling Neurodivergent Young Adults through Life Transitions

a Clinical Track Workshop

< Live on ZOOM>

Counseling Neurodiverse Young Adults Through Life Transitions is a dynamic, interactive workshop designed to equip professionals with the tools and insights necessary to support neurodivergent young adults—including those with Autism, ADHD, and AuDHD—as they navigate critical life transitions. The presentation integrates lecture, experiential learning, and practical resources to create a well-rounded and engaging experience for participants.

The workshop begins with a brief introduction, during which the presenter will share relevant professional background and lived experience, establishing a foundation of neurodiversity-affirming care. Participants will be introduced to the neurodiverse profiles of autistic and ADHD individuals, including those with overlapping or blended presentations (AuDHD), with a particular emphasis on how these identities manifest during the transition from adolescence to adulthood.

The lecture portion will focus on common challenges faced by neurodivergent youth in transition—such as executive functioning struggles, identity development, late diagnosis, emotional regulation, masking, and difficulties in navigating independence. Special attention will be given to the unique needs of clients who are navigating the shift into college, employment, or independent living. Family systems will be discussed as a key factor in the success of these transitions, with guidance on how to foster healthy interdependence and communication.

An experiential component will follow, in which participants work in small groups to analyze case studies representing real-world challenges. These case examples will encourage discussion of appropriate interventions, client-centered support strategies, and culturally sensitive approaches. Participants will then reconvene to share insights and reflections with the larger group.

The workshop will also provide a range of practical tools and resources. These include executive functioning strategies, sensory regulation tips, identity exploration exercises, and tools for developing life skills. Attendees will receive digital handouts such as worksheets, checklists, and a curated list of recommended books, apps, and support organizations.

The session will conclude with a Q&A segment, allowing participants to explore specific questions related to their work. A guided reflection will invite attendees to consider how they can integrate a neurodiversity-affirming approach in their own practices moving forward.

This workshop is ideal for therapists, school counselors, educators, and allied professionals who support neurodivergent youth and families. Whether new to the topic or experienced in the field, participants will leave with deeper insight, practical tools, and renewed confidence in their ability to support young adults in transition.

Presenter: Eva Mendes, LMHC

As an autism, ADHD, and AuDHD expert, author, and therapist, I’ve spent the past several years specializing in the neurodiverse experience—particularly in supporting teens and young adults through life transitions. My work centers on a neurodiversity-affirming approach that integrates clinical expertise with deep understanding of lived experience, supporting clients in identity development, executive functioning, and relationship dynamics. I’ve presented on these topics in professional settings, written extensively about neurodiverse mental health, and maintain an active therapy practice dedicated to helping neurodivergent individuals and families thrive.
