Action Methods in Couples Therapy
Action methods employ sensory attention, movement and role-playing to heighten the impact of psychological interventions. This experiential and interactive workshop introduces therapists at all levels of training and experience to at least three specific examples of action methods that may be applied to a broad variety of situations/problems frequently encountered in couples therapy. Following a brief conceptual overview, we shall first practice these action methods in pairs; next, verbally process participants experience of each enactment via the use of strategic questioning; then, consider some clinical vignettes that feature the use of these action methods; and finally interact with questions and answers.
Presenter: Daniel Wiener, PhD
Working with Couples can be a challenge for event the most seasoned clinician. Decades of exploring approaches to getting partners to communicate differently has led our presenter, Dr Wiener, to develop and teach a variety of Action Method approaches. From Drama Therapy and Improv-based techniques, as well as other 'non-talk-therapy' methods, Dr Wiener will playfully help us expand out comfort levels, enabling us to be more effective therapists.
