Obtaining and documenting informed consent is foundational for counseling services providers. Yet private practitioners, particularly, often struggle to craft an informed consent document that meets legal and ethical requirements, while providing sufficient information to guide an authentic conversation about beginning treatment with clients. In this two-hour working session, participants are guided through developing such a document, with opportunities to draft sections on the counselor and their practice, risks and benefits of therapy, confidentiality and record-keeping, as well as policies related to distance counseling, emergency contact and coverage, electronic communication, and client rights. In addition, participants learn about special informed consent provisions for working with children or people who are unable to legally consent, and develop sections that address assent and guardian consent. Participants will also have opportunities to share drafts with peers for review and feedback.
Presenter: Annabelle Frazier, MS, PhD, has a background in forensic documentation. She presentes regulary at local graduate programs on Documentation best practices.
